  • Share I have come here to share my views on the dangerous conditions outside Oropi School. I have just read Leonie's comments, above, and she has summed up the situation with great clarity. I support all of the TDG recommendations, namely: • Considering the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Oropi Road and Gammon Mill Road with school access forming a fourth leg. • Ensuring pedestrian movement takes place at the existing established crossing point, with improvements made to crossing the bus bay area to be installed and maintained free of buses. • Implementing a 40km/h school speed zone to reduce speed because a recent speed survey indicated that current average speeds need to be reduced. • Improved on-street parking with footpath for safe access on both sides of Oropi Road in front of the school • Work on a travel-safe plan with Council, to educate the community of rules and procedures required on Facebook Share I have come here to share my views on the dangerous conditions outside Oropi School. • Share Hi there, I am writing as a parent with grave concern about the current roading issues that face Oropi school at present. We are all aware about how the regions around Auckland are surging with a population growth that is unprecedented and Tauranga has not escaped this, the knock-on effect of population growth is roll growth and more and more cars on the road. I am therefore incredibly surprised / appalled that the council currently views the current roading issue around Oropi to be acceptable and that because some money was spent on the area a few years ago that there is currently no further need to invest in the roading around the school. As mentioned earlier Tauranga is growing at such a great rate that as a council it is your responsibility to ensure that you take such factors as this into consideration to ensure the safety of our children, Oropi road has recently been identified as a speed zone by the police in a recent news article so it is only a matter of time until something tragic occurs outside the school. Please therefore consider the following as a matter of urgency: • Considering the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Oropi Road and Gammon Mill Road with school access forming a fourth leg. • Improved on-street parking with footpath for safe access on both sides of Oropi Road in front of the school • Work on a travel-safe plan with Council, to educate the community of rules and procedures required I look forward to one day soon seeing the results of a council that has the foresight to move reactively to the current issues it faces rather than sitting on its hands and letting bureaucracy takes its slow grinding pace! • Share Hi there, as a parent of a child at Oropi School, I am very concerned about the traffic safety around the school. I feel it is only a matter of time until there is a serious incident involving a child being injured or worse, and that is unconscionable. The consulting group TDG (Traffic Design Group) have made the following recommendations: • Considering the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Oropi Road and Gammon Mill Road with school access forming a fourth leg. • Improved on-street parking with footpath for safe access on both sides of Oropi Road in front of the school • Work on a travel-safe plan with Council, to educate the community of rules and procedures required I believe there is some urgency required to address these recommendations. On many occasions I have witnessed large trucks and cars passing the school at high speeds, sometimes upwards of 60km/h. The school is on a blind corner, and the consequences of this traffic hitting a child would be horrific. While I believe the TDG recommendations above should all be considered, there is inadequate signage and road markings, and I believe this needs to be urgently addressed as a priority.
