Kia ora, welcome to the Athenree Jetty project page. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know about the project, including key details, next steps and frequently asked questions. Check out the information on the right-hand side of this page for all this and more.

About the project

The jetty on Athenree Esplanade, behind 12 Roretana Drive, is in a very poor condition and needs replacing.

We are building a new replacement jetty, which will be the same size as the current jetty, but at a lower height, to meet health and safety regulations which have been introduced since the original jetty was built.

That means during king tide and storm events the deck could be below water. But to build it at same height would now require balustrades, which isn’t ideal for water activities and access direct off the jetty.

The sea wall at the Athenree North Foreshore Reserve, located behind numbers 44 - 52 Roretana Drive, is also due to be replaced and this work will be done around the same time.

In 2023, we pre-engaged with residents that resided close to the jetty to obtain feedback. This helped us shape the design options.

We were informed:

  • Most wanted the jetty to remain.
  • 25% of residents surveyed used the jetty for boating.
  • The majority used the jetty to access the foreshore.
  • Swimming and fishing are also activities that are undertaken.
  • The jetty is used as a viewing platform and a place for passive recreation.

What's happening now? (23 April 2025)

The tender process is now complete and we're excited to share that HEB Construction has been awarded the contract to build the jetty.

We expect the jetty to be mostly completed by the end of June, but we don't have an exact start date yet as the work is part of HEB's wider programme across the District.

We're also waiting on specially treated timber - this timber is treated to meet the marine H6 standard, ensuring that it is durable enough to withstand harsh marine environments, including saltwater and pests, so it will last for many years in the water. Once the timber is ready and we're able to get started with the work, we'll let you know!

We can also confirm building consent was granted for our preferred design, 'Option 2', below. The new jetty will be the same size as the exisiting jetty, but lower in heigh to meet current health and safety regulations.
