Nau mai (welcome)! This is your place to find key information on the Ōmokoroa Road Stage 2 Urbanisation project.

Project Overview:

The Ōmokoroa Peninsula is experiencing rapid growth, with an expected population of 13,000 residents by 2050. To support this growth and manage the increasing traffic demands, we're upgrading a section of Ōmokoroa Road - from Prole Road to the railway - a distance of just over 1km. This is a key part of the Ōmokoroa Structure Plan.

Once finished, it will enhance road safety, provide better transport options, improve accessibility and ensure the infrastructure meets urban standards.

The $13 million project is part-funded by the Crown Infrastructure Partners (CIP) Fund’s bundle of ‘shovel ready’ projects allocated for Ōmokoroa

Work started in February 2025 and is expected to wrap up by mid-2026.

Higgins Contractors has been contracted to carry out the work on behalf of Council.

Key upgrades include:

  • Widening the current two-lane road to four lanes
  • Shared cycling and walking pathways
  • Upgrade of the Ōmokoroa Road-Flounder Drive intersection
  • Signalised pedestrian access
  • Improved road safety measures, including lighting and signage
  • Connections for future amenities
  • Improvements to water mains
  • Relocating utilities underground
  • New kerbing and stormwater infrastructure

Update - 28 August 2025

From Monday 1 September, construction of a new footpath starts within the park and ride area on Ōmokoroa Road (this is the gravel area on the eastern side of the road, near the Prole Road intersection). We expect this work to take approximately two months.

During this time, the carpark will be closed. The bus stop (2234) and cark park will move to a temporary park and ride facility on Prole Road - see map below for directions.

Once work is complete, the park and ride service and bus stop will return to Ōmokoroa Road.

You can also expect a minor shift in traffic alignment at the Ōmokoroa Road/Prole Road roundabout, with road surfacing works starting. Increased activity is expected near the roundabout, so please follow all lane markings and speed signage carefully.

From Monday 8 September, we will be extending the traffic management past Settler Avenue/Ridge Drive roundabout towards the railway bridge. Traffic flow will be maintained in both directions at all times; however lanes will be a little narrower so please follow speed signage and stay alert.

There will be a closure of the footpath on the eastern side of the road within the work site, and the bus stop at Ridge Drive (2239) will be temporarily closed. Bus users are advised to use the bus stop at Lynley Park Drive (2237).
