Draft Lund Road Reserve Concept Plan for Katikati

Background

The Lund Road Reserve which includes the Waitekohe Stream, is a pine forest comprising 89 hectares located between Lund Road and Thompsons Track Road, Katikati. In 2018, Council consulted on a proposal in its Reserve Management Plan to develop this block for recreation opportunities with the proviso that forestry would continue. Since then, Council has been working with a group of local enthusiasts to design tracks and trails for mountain biking and horse riding.

Earlier this year we sought your informal feedback on some concept plans for proposed horse and mountain bike track/trails and a car park for users. A lot of feedback received generally referred to the following:

• Car park location and layout options;
• Lockable gates to assist with safety and security concerns;
• Wash-down areas and mounting blocks for horses, parking for disabled and separate car parks for horse and bike users; and
• Location of toilets and bike racks.

We have reflected your feedback in the updated concept plans that we are seeking feedback on (see the key documents section on this page and fill out the feedback form to let us know what you think). We also received feedback on how the park should be operated, which we take into account in terms of the signage and facilities management when the park is open.

We want to hear from you

• Proposed name for the Reserve - Waitekohekohe Reserve.
  

This park is currently called Lund Road Reserve due to its location. The Reserve Management Plan signalled that Council would reconsider its name and formally name the reserve. We are now proposing to rename it, as the key access points are no longer intended to be on Lund Road and to better reflect its historic significance. Our policy acknowledges the New Zealand Geographic Board (Ngā Pou Taunaha O Aotearoa) Rules of Nomenclature which provides guidelines encouraging the use of original place names from Tangata Whenua, in relation to their tribal boundary. ‘Waitekohekohe’ is the name gifted by Ngai Tamawhariua for this reserve, in reference to the ancestral name for this area and its relationship to spiritual waters, a sense of yearning and climbing trees and vines. We are also seeking your feedback on this proposed name.
