Playground design revealed

30 January 2025

We are excited to share the new playground design for Conway Road Reserve, which came together after your shared your ideas with us.

Through our community survey, a workshop with tamariki at Paengaroa School and meetings with the Paengaroa Community Association, you told us you wanted a playspace with these main themes:

  • Inclusive and accessible
  • A bike/learn to ride/scooter track
  • Suitable for younger children
  • Has shade and seating
  • Nature play and natural climbing experiences
  • Fenced, to slow children down around the playground

We listened to the kōrero and have included a range of special features and fun play equipment for tamariki to enjoy. Careful thought has gone into creating a space that works for everyone.

A play area aimed at younger children and those who prefer a lower stimulus environment will be positioned closer to the shelter, with fencing and planting creating a more secure, quieter space close to parents.

Higher energy play, like swings and climbing equipment, will be positioned on the other side of the playground.

And a shared path around the perimeter of the reserve (not shown in the playground design plan), will include learn to ride and bike features.

The playground equipment was ordered in late December 2024, and the landscaping contract will be going out to tender soon, with the installation expected to be during the winter.

Work scheduled to start 22 April

We're happy to share that construction of the new playground is about to begin, with work scheduled to start on Tuesday 22 April.

As part of the project, we'll also be building a new shared path around the edge of the reserve.

To make sure everyone stays safe while the mahi (work) is happening, the whole reserve will be closed for the duration of construction.

We're aiming to have the playground finished by mid-year and will keep you posted as things progress.

Earthworks start

Things are starting to take shape! We've made a good start on the earthworks for the playground and shared path. Next up, we'll be building the bike features, adding the playground edging, and pouring concrete for parts of the path. The playground equipment is still a few weeks away, as this is one of the last things to go in, but we'll keep you updated along the way.

Learn-to-ride features are taking place

14 May

Work on the shared path is coming along nicely, with some key learn-to-ride features taking shape. Check out some of them below:

This large log is destined for great things! It's being turned into a bike feature to help test riders' balance skills. The aim will be to cross the log without falling off. Great for developing core strength, control and precision!

The aptly-named 'bone rattler' will test control and handling skills - great practice for unpredictable trails out in the 'wild'.

The sandy path to the right is what's known as a 'hoggin' path, and is being created to help teach bikers how to ride on gravel.

If you look closely, you can see three 'pumps' starting to take shape. These are a series of rolling humps that riders move over by shifting their body weight - without pedalling!

Concrete being poured for a 'tabletop' feature - a jump with a flat top and sloped sides that riders can roll over or launch off.
