Local Alcohol Policy and Alcohol Control Bylaw review
Consultation has concluded
Feedback is now closed. Thank you for your contributions.
We’re proposing some changes to how we manage alcohol in the Western Bay of Plenty and we want to know what you think about the changes.
Alcohol is part of New Zealand culture, and while most Kiwis enjoy their drinks responsibly, we need to protect our communities from harm.
We’ve undertaken a review of our current alcohol regulations and found they could do more to reduce alcohol related harm in our communities.
We have two tools to help manage alcohol – the Local Alcohol Policy, and Alcohol Control Bylaw.
The Local Alcohol Policy helps the community have a say on who can sell alcohol, how and where, by guiding licensing decisions. The Alcohol Control Bylaw sets out where drinking alcohol in a public area is not allowed.
We’re proposing some changes to these tools and want to know what you think. The most significant questions are:
Policy changes:
Should alcohol stores (off-licences includes – grocery stores and supermarkets) stop selling alcohol at 9pm (not 10pm) across the Western Bay of Plenty?
Should there be a cap on the number of bottle stores across the Te Puke-Maketu ward?
Bylaw change:
Should the public alcohol ban zone (Alcohol Control Area) extend to the whole of Te Puke, not just town centre?
The policy and bylaw were adopted in 2015 and 2016 respectively and are required for review under the legislation.
Feedback is open from Friday 5 November to Tuesday 6 December and will inform the final Local Alcohol Policy and Alcohol Control Bylaw presented to Council’s Policy Committee for approval in March 2022.
Your can read more about the changes in these documents Alcohol Control Bylaw Statement of Proposal and Draft Bylaw, Local Alcohol Policy Statement of Proposal, Draft Policy and Research Report.
If you would like to speak to your submission at a Have Your Say Day in Council Chambers on 14 December, please email haveyoursay@westernbay.govt.nz or phone 07 571 8008 no later than Tuesday 6 December.
