Wilson Rd North upgrades
We’re upgrading Wilson Road North to improve stormwater drainage, road condition, and walking connections in the area.
This project is part of our wider programme to maintain our roads across the Western Bay. This urban–rural road may not be a major traffic route, but it’s vital for locals - providing access to school, marae, homes and farmland.
What’s happening and why
Wilson Road North is relatively flat, especially south of Maketū School. That makes it harder for water to drain away during heavy rain, which can cause pooling, flooding, and damage to the road surface.
To fix this, we’ll be:
Installing stormwater culverts (structures that help water flow under the road)
Improving the water flow paths
Using rip rap (layers of loose rock) to slow down water and reduce erosion
We’ll also be delivering a Maketū Community Board initiative to extend the footpath in this area - helping to make it safer and easier for people to walk between homes, school, and other key locations.
If needed, we’ll check and replace sections of the water pipes while we’re there too.
Starting early 2026
Estimated duration: 6 months (weather dependent)
What to expect during the works
Road closure: Wilson Road North may be closed to through-traffic, but access will remain open for residents
School access: Access to Maketū School will remain open at all times - including for buses and whānau at drop-off and pick-up
Construction activity: You’ll see construction crews, trucks, and hear noise during the day
Disruption management: We’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption and share regular updates
