About the project

A pedestrian refuge is being installed on Beach Road, near Waihī Beach School, to give tamariki and their whānau a safer way to cross the road.

Funded by the Waihī Beach Community Board, the refuge will provide a protected place to stop in the centre of the road and wait for cars to pass.

It will also make the road appear narrower at this point, helping to reduce the speed of traffic.

As part of the mahi, a footpath will also be built along Beach Road, from Brown's Drive to the start of the walkway that links to Ralph Lane and Brown's Drive.

The works are expected to take around four weeks, starting Monday 30 June 2025.

This section of Beach Road is expected to be closed for two days during the second week of works (most likely on 9 and 10 July) while the refuge is being built.

During this time there will be a detour in place via Leo Street, Dillon Street and Wilson Road.
