Kia ora, welcome to the Poripori Road slip repairs project page. Here, you'll find everything you need to know about the project, including plans, latest updates and photos.

About the project

In January 2023, during Cyclone Gabrielle, two roadside slips developed along Poripori Road. Both slips are now affecting the stability and integrity of the road and need to be repaired.

So that we can safely repair the larger of the two slips, Poripori Road will be closed between Kumikumi Road and Tebbutt Road for around eight weeks, from 11 May until 3 July, weather dependent.

Residents will be able to access their properties from either side of the slip site, located 600m south of Tebbutt Road, however there will be no through access.

Detours will be in place via State Highway 29, Cambridge Road, State Highway 2, Wairoa Road and Crawford Road.

Stop/Go traffic management will also be in place at the site of the other slip, which is around 600m from the SH29 intersection, with delays expected.

We understand this will cause disruption and appreciate your understanding while we carry out these essential repairs.

Slip 1 - approx. 600m south of Tebbutt Road

This underslip is around 30m wide and 8m high. It has slipped into a stream where two large culverts carry the stream under the road. Temporary barriers and stormwater controls have been put in place to slow down further erosion until the work is completed. The repair will involve building a Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) retaining wall, along with timber shear piles to suit the narrow site.

Works will include:

  • Digging out the slipped area into the road - the excavations will be 5-8m deep
  • Driving timber piles into the ground to form a solid support, and fixing horizontal timber boards to the front of the piles to hold back the soil (the piles act as anchors while the timber facing keeps the soil in place, creating a stable wall that supports the slope behind it)
  • Creating a section of MSE wall - this is built by layering compacted soil with reinforcing strips that extend back into the slope, with a facing panel at the front to form a visible wall
  • Drainage improvements
  • Installing kerb and channel
  • Road resurfacing

Due to the excavation and the narrow section of road, there will not be enough room for vehicles to pass around the site, so the road will be fully closed while the work takes place.

Slip 2 - approx. 600m from the SH29 intersection

This underslip is about 14m wide by 5m high and is located in the berm on a narrow section of the road. It has damaged the timber safety rail and slipped into the stream below. A temporary asphalt bund was installed to divert stormwater, while it was waiting to be fixed.

Works will include:

  • Realigning the road away from the slip
  • Installing kerb and channel
  • Drainage improvements
  • Road resurfacing

Work is planned to start mid-May 2026. Stop/Go traffic management will be in place and delays are expected.
