Kia ora, welcome to the Park Road Reserve Seawall project page. Here, you’ll find everything you need to know about the project, including latest updates, and a timeline of upcoming steps.

About the project

We are planning to replace the 220m-long rock seawall at Park Road Reserve in Maketū with a new wall.

The current seawall is not made to modern best practice standards and is vulnerable to damage, particularly during storm events. The work will include:

  • Retrieving rocks that have been dislodged into the estuary
  • Replacing existing inappropriately sized rocks with larger rocks
  • Installing a geotextile cloth in between the new wall and the harbour edge of the reserve to minimise erosion

This is part of our ongoing Coastal Structures Renewal Programme, which replaces aged structures across the rohe (District).

Work on the new seawall is expected to start after the 2025/26 summer, to minimise disruption to park users. The park, including the playground and toilets, will remain open during works, but areas near the harbour edge will be fenced off for safety reasons. The boat ramp will also stay open during the works, for getting boats on and off the water.
