Starting early 2026
Estimated duration: 6 months

Kia ora, welcome to the Wilson Road North project page. Here, you'll find everything you need to know about the project, including the latest updates and next steps.

We're rebuilding Wilson Road North to improve the road, stormwater management, and walking routes for the Maketu community.

The project includes a full road rebuild along Wilson Road North, stormwater drainage improvements, and the extension of the footpath to the houses north of Arawa Ave - a priority raised by the Community Board to support safer walking routes to the school for tamariki.

Project update June 2026

Work continues to progress on the Wilson Road North upgrade project, including installation of the new underground stormwater network, road reconstruction, kerb works, and footpath construction.

Good progress continues across the site, with the southern section of the project - south of property no. 580 - remaining on track to be completed and sealed by the end of June 2026.

Work is continuing on the northern section of the project between Spencer Avenue and Church Road, where crews are currently installing new underground stormwater pipes and associated structures

However, the overall project is now expected to be completed in September 2026, rather than June as originally planned.

The project has experienced delays due to several contributing factors, including global supply chain disruptions, challenges sourcing some materials and resources associated with ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and severe weather events between January and April this year.

Traffic management and road closure

A road closure remains in place during working hours (7:00am–5:30pm) between Spencer Avenue and Church Road while these works are carried out.

The closure began on Monday 18 May 2026 and is expected to remain in place through to August 2026.

These works involve deep trench excavations within the road corridor to install new stormwater pipes underground, along with associated kerb and footpath construction. The closures are necessary to protect both the public and workers on site.

During this time:

  • Access to private properties will continue to be maintained
  • Please allow extra travel time due to the road closure
  • Access to Maketū School during drop-off and pick-up times remains via the Arawa Avenue direction

Please do not drive through road closure signage or barriers. These are in place for everyone’s safety, as there are open trenches, machinery, and changing ground conditions within the work area.

Stormwater upgrades and roadside drainage

As part of the stormwater improvements, we are installing new underground stormwater pipes and roadside channels (swales) to help improve stormwater management along the road.

Swales are shallow channels designed to help collect, slow, and direct stormwater during heavy rain. Along with the new underground pipes, they form part of the long-term solution to improve drainage, reduce surface flooding, and help protect the road from water damage.

Where there are drops from the path into drains:

  • Temporary fencing has already been installed and will later be replaced with permanent fencing where the height is significant and there are no intersecting driveways
  • Between property numbers 542–548, timber post-and-rail fencing will be installed where driveways are closely spaced and the height is moderate

What you may continue to see on site

Residents may continue to see:

  • Construction crews and heavy machinery
  • Stop/go traffic management
  • Temporary speed restrictions
  • Daytime construction noise and vibration
  • Ongoing drainage, kerb, and footpath works

Dust suppression measures continue to be monitored and adjusted where required to help minimise impacts on nearby properties.

Project update: March 2026

Work is currently at the earthworks stage on Wilson Road North. The team is forming new stormwater table drains to help improve water flow along the road.

New driveway crossings and culverts are also being installed, which will allow stormwater to move safely under the road while maintaining access to properties. These works are an important early step in preparing the site for the next stages of the upgrade.

What to expect during the work:

• Wilson Road North will potentially be closed to through-traffic, but access will remain open for residents.

• Access to Maketu School will be always maintained, including for buses and private vehicles during school drop-off and pick-up times.

• Expect to see construction crews, machinery, and daytime noise

• Thanks to those of you who came along to our community info session on Tuesday 9 December at the Maketū Community Centre. During construction, we’ll do everything we can to minimise disruption and keep the community informed.

Key info:

  • Start date: Early 2026
  • Duration: 6 months
  • Access: Local access for residents will be maintained
  • Impacted area: Near Maketu School and along Wilson Road North
