FAQs
Land-Based Disposal: Exploring potential sites for land irrigation or wetland treatment systems.
Upgraded Ocean Outfall: If land options are not feasible, upgrading the existing outfall may be considered.
Continue technical and environmental assessments of shortlisted options.
Finalise the Future Directions Report by 2026 and prepare for resource consent applications.
- Pipeline Pressure Monitoring: We continuously monitor the pressure within the pipeline using advanced alarm systems that detect sudden changes. This allows us to respond promptly to any potential issues.
- Flow Meter Monitoring: Our flow meters are integrated with SCADA telemetry systems, which are equipped with set alarms. This technology helps us keep track of the flow rates and detect any anomalies that could indicate a leak.
- Wetland Level Management: We maintain wetland levels as low as possible to provide additional storage capacity. This precautionary measure ensures that we have sufficient space to accommodate any unexpected surges in wastewater flow.
- Additional Storage Solutions: To further enhance our capacity to manage wastewater, we have implemented additional storage solutions, including a pond and a bladder tank. These facilities provide extra storage space, reducing the risk of overflow and leaks.
Why is a new solution needed?
The current pipeline is at the end of its operational life, and the existing consent will expire in 2038. Finding a sustainable and culturally acceptable solution is essential to prevent future environmental issues and meet new wastewater standards.
Who is involved in the project?
The project is a collaborative effort between Council, tangata whenua, local community groups, and technical experts.
What options are being considered?
What are the next steps?
How is Council minimising the risk of leaks from the outfall pipeline?
Council is committed to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the Katikati Wastewater Treatment Plant. One of our key priorities is to minimise the risk of leaks from the outfall pipeline. To achieve this, we employ several strategies:
