Why the redevelopment?

Affordable housing for older people is a key area of concern in our District - need is increasing, and supply is very limitedAt the moment Katikati’s housing stock of mostly three- and four-bedroom homes doesn’t fit the needs of our older population who typically want to downsize. Providing affordable housing, especially for older people, often means they can stay in their local community and continue to contribute to the strong social networks and proactive community that makes Katikati so special.

    How is it being funded?

The project is fully funded through the Better Off Fund ($4.6m) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development’s Affordable Housing Fund ($6.5m), which will see Council provide a mix of one- and two-bedroom units that also cater for those with mobility issues, at no cost to ratepayers.

    Who is doing the mahi?

Mount Maunganui company iLine Construction was awarded the design and build contract for the 26-unit redevelopment.

How long will the work take?

The units are expected to be finished by July/August 2025.

Where have the original tenants been housed?

Council built seven new elder housing units at Beach Road in 2022. Heron Crescent tenants moved into these units in 2023.

Who is eligible to live in the Heron Crescent units?

To be eligible, you must be a New Zealand resident, 65 or older, and/or qualify for Government superannuation. Applicants must be able to demonstrate their total assets are worth $40,000 or less for a single person, and $50,000 or less for a couple. They must also be able to demonstrate they are able to live independently.

    How do I apply?

Those wanting to apply for a unit should complete an Eligibility Criteria Assessment Form for each person who will be staying in a unit. The form can be found at: www.westernbay.govt.nz/community/elder-housing
